Defy by Sarah B. Larson

Title: Defy
Author: Sarah B. Larson
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Published: 7 January, 2014
Genre: Young Adult/Fantasy/Romance
Source: Netgalley ARC

Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king's army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince's guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can't prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.

The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she's sworn to protect?

Well I certainly do, and for me, that's a pretty bang-on description of how I felt because of this book.

Defy had so much potential. Straight after reading the first section of the blurb, I knew that I wanted to read this book. I didn't pay much attention to the part with the romance and the vying for Alex/Alexa's heart, because I had already presumed romance would play a part. I mean, it's almost a given nowadays, with YA fiction. I expected the more important aspects to dominate and was okay with a little romance being tossed in. And plus, it reminded me of Mulan. I love Mulan!

Unfortunately, my expectations were met for only a short period of this book.

So Defy, as the blurb explains, follows Alexa who has had to hide her identity and pretend to be a boy just after her parents are killed by an evil, fire-wielding sorcerer. She and her brother, Marcel, who devised their plan, join the King Hector's army and soon, they're the best of the Prince's personal guard.
From chapter one, I liked Alexa. She seemed so badass, what with her stubbornness, and her ferocity, and her being able to take down each and every other member of Prince Damian's guard. She was the strong female protagonist, who's story I was really looking forward to following. It was obvious that she had been hardened by her tough experiences and I was excited to dig deeper into her character.

I felt like the author, Larson, started off really well with this character. Slowly but surely, she added the layers of necessary character development and it seemed to be really fitting together. But then she lost sight of the character she had in mind and began going off on tangents. After Marcel's untimely and rather touching death, she stayed strong. After Damian's first surprise reaching out, she remained stoic. She was focused and determined and strong. But all of a sudden, she was wondering how Damian's lips would feel against hers, and how Rylan's body was more built than Damian's, and all that stuff. I just felt that it was out of nowhere, and that was where Larson really began to falter.
I noticed this sudden change in Damian too, though his was more realistic.

Only other characters I believed to have been significant were Rylan and Lisbet. Even Iker, seemingly the antagonist, wasn't even built upon. It felt like Larson spent three-quarters of the book with King Hector as the primary 'baddy' but changed her mind at the last minute. It would have turned out better, had the author taken a bit more time to dwell on how bad Iker really was.
Also, the whole attempted love triangle just didn't work for me. First of all, Alexa's inconsistency meant that she went from hating Prince Damian on one page, to falling head over heels, watching him sleep, on the next. Alexa's desperate attempts to trust Damian, though it sometimes seemed she was looking for reasons not to trust him, grew annoying kinda quickly. I also felt that Rylan, his feelings for Alexa, and her very confusing feelings for him, were just thrown into the mix to spice up the story. But it was doing fine without all that!
It was disappointing because I really liked Alexa, before all the indecisive loving began.

I can't deny that I also really liked parts of the book, too. Put the romance out of mind for a second and the majority remaining was really good! I loved all the fighting, and the action, and the fantasy sword-play. It was exciting to read, especially where Alexa trains to defeat sorcerers, and then finally goes up against Iker. The action, as well as the smooth flow of the plot, and Larson's great descriptions really brought some chapters to life. There were times that I was reading and just had to stop and read a sentence over and over. Because the descriptions were just on point man! For example, earlier on in the book, one of my favourite quotes was;

"The blackness of the night was like a living thing, breathing in hope and expelling terror."

I really enjoyed putting the descriptions to use and imagining the story in my head. Though the world building also sorta lacked, I think this could be made into a cool movie, minus the excess drama and romance of course!

Overall I actually liked this book, but think it could have been improved in many ways.

I'm pretty sure they're still giving out eARCs to everyone on Netgalley, so go check it out!
If you have already, what did you think of it?

Thanks for reading guys, until next time!

Birthday Book Haul

Books are dangerous.. and bookshops, even more so.

After holidays in Barcelona, I still had a bit of birthday money left in my back pocket and what better thing to spend it on, than books right? Well that's what I seemed to have in mind when I walked into Easons. Honestly, I had only intended to get Legend, by Marie Lu, but you know, the temptation was just too strong! Haha

No but anyway, here are the books I bought!

The Scorch Trials
By James Dashner

I read The Maze Runner near the end of Summer 2013, which was quite a while ago, I know. I was so satisfied with the ending of the first book, and it didn't end with much of a cliffhanger, so I didn't really want to pick up the second, in case I wouldn't enjoy it. But I'm gonna give it a chance anyway, since I've heard some really positive stuff about the rest of the series!

The Fault in our Stars
By John Green

I've actually already read this, but it was on iBooks on my phone, and being one of my top reads of 2013, I just had to get the physical copy, you know, for re-reads and stuff!

All Our Yesterdays
By Cristin Terrill

You would not believe how long I've been waiting for this book to show up in my local bookshop! And you can only imagine how excited I'd gotten when I finally found it haha! It's a shame that it wasn't the one with the original cover, which was what caught my attention in the first place, but I'm still excited to read it!

Clockwork Angel
By Cassandra Clare

There's this awesome booktuber, namely Katytastic, who has raved about this book, and series, enough to make me want to read it. A few other people I know have recommended it too, so I decided to give it a go!

 &

Legend and Champion
By Marie Lu

First of all, there was a 3 for 2 sale in Easons today, right? But the problem was, the only book by Marie Lu included in the sale was Champion. So I got that, and because it obviously didn't make sense buying only the third book in a series, I also got the first. I couldn't find Prodigy though, which is kinda sad and ruined all my plans! Haha

 &

City of Ashes and City of Glass
 By Cassandra Clare

For some strange reason, I've only read the first book in the Mortal Instruments series, the City of Bones. I didn't love it, but I liked it, and really want to find out what happens with Jace and Clary, so I got the next two books! Again, part of the 3 for 2 sale.. haha

   &

Hunger and Lies
 By Michael Grant

This is sort of similar to my Legend series problem, but in this case, I couldn't find the first book of the series! I must have visited like fifteen different bookshops, including shops in the UK and Spain, might I add, yet I found every other book in the series except the first. It was really annoying, but because I had a really good feeling about the series, I went ahead and got the second and third books!

So, I guess I won't be buying lunch for school anytime soon, if you know what I mean *nudge nudge*.
Yeah.. I'm broke! Hahaha. Man, I really need to get a part-time job!
Anyway, what do you guys think of my pathetic willpower? Do you, perhaps, have the same problem? Haha

Thanks for reading guys, see you!

Die For Me by Amy Plum

Title: Die For Me
Author: Amy Plum
Publisher: Harper Teen
Published: 10 May, 2011
Genre: Young Adult / Romance / Paranormal
Source: Library

In the City of Lights, two star-crossed lovers battle a fate that is destined to tear them apart again and again for eternity.

When Kate Mercier's parents die in a tragic car accident, she leaves her life--and memories--behind to live with her grandparents in Paris. For Kate, the only way to survive her pain is escaping into the world of books and Parisian art. Until she meets Vincent.

Mysterious, charming, and devastatingly handsome, Vincent threatens to melt the ice around Kate's guarded heart with just his smile. As she begins to fall in love with Vincent, Kate discovers that he's a revenant--an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save the lives of others. Vincent and those like him are bound in a centuries-old war against a group of evil revenants who exist only to murder and betray. Kate soon realizes that if she follows her heart, she may never be safe again.

This if the first book to have me smiling and tiredly rolling my eyes at the same time. It's a classic example of the well-known 'damsel in distress and a knight in shining armor' kind of thing, but a little twist, that twist being supernatural. Didn't see that coming..

The story begins with a depressed Kate, who just lost both her parents in an accident, and is living in Paris with her older sister Georgia and grandparents. Anyone who looses their parents is expected to grieve, that much is pretty obvious, despite how strong a facade they put on display. But, if by seven months later, you're still curled up in bed, refusing to get back into the world and interact with other humans, you know there's a slight chance you might be taking it a tad far. Don't get me wrong, I can't imagine loosing any of my parents, but were it to happen, I wouldn't expect to shut myself off from the world altogether, going to school, reading books, sleeping and repeating. I get it, it's tempting, just reading and sleeping, but it would get to the point where I would begin doubting my sanity.

I think it's safe to say that Kate wasn't exactly my favourite character. I just found that her character development was a tad off, what with her being so unbelievably weak and innocent in the first half of the book, and then later on, she's standing her ground in training, against the undead, and fight off Vincent's enemies? Personally I didn't think it was very realistic.
And Vincent, come on. The only opinion of him that will stay with me long after reading this, is that after Kate broke up with him, he completely broke down. I mean, he was even worse than Kate! I know it was all to show how strongly he loved her, but his drastic transformation after the break-up, was definitely unexpected and it made him seem too desperate.

In spite of all this, I couldn't actually stop reading the book. Though I wasn't particularly fond of the two protagonists, my fondness of the concept and plot was undeniable. I completely drank up the whole supernatural twist. With the reddish tinge of the cover and Kate's red dress, I have to admit that my mind jumped to vampires, and I was okay with that, but I was surprised to read something very different. Vincent and his family, albeit the similarities to vampires were numerous, they seemed so unique. And I think that, as well as proving an interesting concept, it was put across very important themes. Undying love, importance of inner-strength, selflessness, just to name a few.

Oh and another thing I loved was the action. You wouldn't think that a YA paranormal romance would have so much fighting and be so action-packed, but it did, which was one of the main reasons for my reading on. It was really exciting.

If you really like romance and action in a supernatural read, I would suggest this title.

Have you read the Revenant series yet? What were your thoughts on it?
Thanks for reading guys, see you next time!

The Magician by Michael Scott

Title: The Magician (The Secrets of the immortal Nicholas Flamel #2)
Author: Michael Scott
Publisher: Random House
Published: 5 June, 2008
Genre: Young Adult/Fantasy
Source: Bought

Ashes to ashes...

California:
In the hands of Dr. John Dee and the Dark Elders, the book of Abraham the Mage, could mean the destruction of the world as we know it. The most powerful book of all time, it holds the secret of eternal life — a secret more dangerous than any one man should ever possess. And Dee is two pages away from the knowledge that would bring the Dark Elders into ultimate power.

His only obstacle? Josh and Sophie Newman — who are eight thousand miles away.

Paris:
After fleeing Ojai, Nicholas, Sophie, Josh, and Scatty emerge in Paris. The City of Lights. Home to Nicholas Flamel. Only, this homecoming is anything but sweet.

Time is running out for Nicholas and Perenelle. Every day they spend without the book, they age one year: their magic becomes weaker and their bodies more frail. For Flamel, the Prophecy is growing clearer and clearer.

I read this quite a while ago, but something I did today got me thinking about this series and I remembered I hadn't finished reviewing it! The thing, irrelevant, this review, very! Haha

'The Magician' is the thoroughly captivating sequel to 'The Alchemyst', and the second book of the series. It starts up where the first book ended, with the destruction of Hekate's shadowrealm. After an ending like that, you've got to make sure whatever comes next doesn't loose the readers' attention, and I thought Scott succeeded there. You're barely given time to recuperate, before you're meeting new characters and being taken to whole new places.. and I loved it! Haha

One thing I particularly loved about 'The Alchemyst' was the world building of shadowrealms. If you don't already know, shadowrealms are sort of alternate universes, created by the elders. They're all unique and I thoroughly enjoyed exploring Hekate's. In 'The Magician', though we did see a lot less of that, it was balanced out with the twins' being exposed to more magic in the real world. It's equally as magic-laden, what with Sophie's learning fire magic, being granted the Witch of Endor's memories, Josh's being awakened and gifted with the elder Mars' military knowledge.

We're introduced to so many more characters in the second book. The awesome thing about it though, is that you don't get confused or forget any of them, which I gotta give the author props for! Scott further develops the protagonists, but along with that, is his bringing in and developing characters such as Saint-Germain, Joan of Arc, the Witch of Endor and Machiavelli. Also, how cool it is that Michael Scott used well known names like Joan of Arc, and Niccolo Machiavelli, and it still made complete sense? Joan was brave and heroic and Machiavelli was noble yet conniving. It was obvious that Scott had done his homework, because it percolated throughout his work, which was very satisfying to read.

If I can say one thing, it's that Michael Scott has perfected his ability to end books. I say this because I know of a few books, which were good throughout, but the ending let me down. In 'The Magician' however, the ending couldn't have been more engaging and just plain awesome! Who else can make gargoyle statues coming to life, seem so realistic? Haha!

This book is worthy of all the praise attributed, and even that isn't quite enough. If you like magical action-packed reads, this series is definitely for you!

After all my hyping this series up, have you checked it out yet? Haha
Thanks for reading guys, hope you enjoyed it!

Allegiant Book Review

Title: Allegiant
Author: Veronica Roth
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books/Harper Collins
Publication Date: October 22, 2013
Genre: YA/Dystopian
Source: Bought - Easons

The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered—fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.

Veronica Roth is a phenomenal writer. Despite anything and everything said on the contrary, especially in regards to 'Allegiant', you just can't deny it. Or, at least, I couldn't while finishing the Divergent series, and still can't, hours later.

Allegiant, the final installment of the 'Divergent' series, begins with the characters we know and love, coming to terms with the video they've just seen. Aparently the whole faction system, their whole city is part of a big experiement controlled by people outside of Amity fences, to breed a large enough Divergent population. When you put into contrast, the first and final books, the plotline has changed drastically. It's just like admiring one particular section of a painting, and then slowly backing up to see the whole picture. Roth does this in such a subtle way, that you wouldn't notice the drastic change until you really looked into both books. Her ability to do so is truly commendable.

Another thing I noticed about the plot of Allegiant was 1) how smoothly the story ran, and 2) how, in every chapter, was something significant. The first is pretty self-explanatory, no parts of the book felt unnecessarily prolonged nor was any part too fast-paced. The second, however, could use some further explaining. What I meant was, that out of the fifty-six chapters that make up this book, none of them felt like fillers. A filler is a chapter that does absolutely nothing for the plot, character development and so on, and they're found in almost every book nowadays. But I didn't think Allegiant had any of those. Every chapter made sense, and felt necessary.

"The world beyong ours is full of roads and dark buildings and collapsing power lines."
- Tris

One thing that the first book, Divergent, sort of lacked, was impressive world building. I don't think I have to stress how important it is for a YA dystopian to have good world building. We, the readers, have to know the world doesn't exist, but believe that it could exist. In Divergent, only the Dauntless compound was thoroughly explored. In Allegiant, everything from the city's history, to the Bureau outside of the city, was built so well.

After Tris, Four and the gang leave the city, and are taken to the Bureau by Amar, descriptions go through the roof. Not in such a way that you're overwhelmed with description after description, but rather, that you don't have to try so hard to imagine the world you're reading about, it comes naturally. That's something I really enjoyed about this book, because ultimately, your reading experience is made so much more fun.

"I'm sick of doing bad things and liking it and then wondering what's wrong with me. I want it to be over. I want to start again."
- Peter

Oh my God, the character development in this book is unbelievable! Like.. holy crap!
Tris is now my favourite heroine, of all time, and that's saying a whole lot! Who thought the fragile little protagonist of Divergent would ever turn out to be such a strong and mature, leader in what, a year? And Roth's bringing this transformation to life, I thought, was just so impressive. For me, one of the key moments when I just knew Tris' had really grown up, was later on in the book, with her forgiving Four. After the fight they had, and Four's participating in Nita's plan, I thought they were done for good. I was impressed when Tris actually understood that they stay together because they make each other better people and whatnot.

Also, it wasn't just Tris' character who's development was more than impressive. I felt like most characters across the board were well developed, from Christina, to Cara, to Peter, to Caleb, and most of all, Tobias. Any character who, in my opinion, needed to be fleshed out, was fleshed out and it was done effortlessly. Nearing the end of the story, after all the tragedies, the most significant of all took place; Tobias. I have no uncertainty in my saying that Four has changed so much, there's little resemblence between his character in Divergent and the finale, Allegiant. In the beginning of the book I didn't actually like how much he had changed, because he seemed too vulnerable, but it worked out perfectly at the end.

"'Oh, are we at the insult part of the breakup?' she says. 'Because I got in a lot of practice after what happened with Will. I have several choice things to say about her nose'"
- Cara

Man, did Roth's writing improve after writing 'Insurgent'! Seriously, I went through Allegiant, thinking to myself, that the writing techniques and styles were so much better this time around!
My review of Insurgent made it obvious that I was disappointed with the ending. With Allegiant, despite all the controversial opinions, I still think it ended perfectly. I don't want to spoil anything, because part of my enjoyment was due to the sheer surprise, but yeah, I thought Roth made the right decision. Sure, she could have ended it another way, but it wouldn't have been as memorable. If I say anything else, I will end up letting something slip, so I'll just leave it at that.

I think some people may be mis-reviewing this book, based more on how they didn't appreciate the surprise at the end. Me, on the other hand, thoroughly enjoyed it, in all it's heart-wrenching glory.

Another long review, sorry guys! Haha

2014 Blogging Resolutions

Hey guys!

I might be a day or two late, you wouldn't believe how long it took to get the Hotel internet working, but Happy New Year! Haha

Without further ado, here are my top five blogging resolutions for the new year!

Schedule Posts

Okay I know for a fact that I'm not alone in saying my posts aren't scheduled. Wait, I'm not alone.. right? Haha anyway, my goal is to post at least three times weekly, and to write the posts a week or two in advance!

Interact with other bloggers

So I just started blogging in September, and book blogging in December, and I'll admit that I haven't been the most sociable blogger.. haha! But that's going to change! Everyone seems so awesome, I need to interact more!

Continue Writing

This isn't exactly blogging-related but, I write. Thought it's obviously for fun, I really want to hone whatever skills I have. I'm a member of this really cool writing forum, WCRPG, and I want to keep writing, even though I barely have the time!

Keep in touch with authors and publishers

After a month of book blogging, I've had a few requests to read and review books. The reviews are coming, but what I want is to actually keep in touch with the great authors and publishers who have sent me copies!

Read 50 books

2013 was a big improvement for me, in terms of reading, and I want to take it a step further! 50 books must seem like nothing, compared to some book bloggers out there, but I'm happy with it, it'll get me reading even more!

So, I don't usually make resolutions, and when I do, I don't usually keep to them, but this year I'm actually going to try! Haha
Did you guys make any resolutions? Any you're really hoping to keep?

Hoping my next post will be a review of Allegiant!
See you guys later!
